Additional information

We make each large ceramic bowl and every piece of Moca tableware in our ceramic workshop in Eindhoven. The tablewares are handmade with a blue pattern created with our Moca machine. Slight variations in shape and glaze application can be expected. The colors may vary due to porcelain mixing while dripping the pattern. Moca clay bowl pattern style:

We create our patterns using the MOCA dripping machine, a computer-controlled machine of our design. This machine drips a mixture of colored and white porcelain inside a plaster mold, resulting in patterns that can be either “opened” or “full”

Full: We allow the dripping to continue for several rotations, making sure each drop falls near the previous one. Each turn we raise the dripping from the bottom to a higher mold section, forming layered patterns.

Opened: We allow the dripping to run for one turn at the top of the mold. This creates an open striped pattern extending to the porcelain bowl’s bottom.

Both: We will pick one cup with an opened pattern and one full. You can also find bowl ceramic sets, where both patterns are available together.

Porcelain large bowl, creation process:

After dripping the blue pattern into the plaster mold, we pour liquid white porcelain into the mold. The porcelain comes into contact with the pattern and surrounds it. The plaster absorbs the water from the porcelain, creating a thickened layer against the mold. After 4 to 6 minutes, we remove the excess liquid porcelain and let the cup dry before stamping ‘Moca’ on the bottom. We clean the angles the next day and improve the surface once the bowl is fully dry. We then perform a bisque firing at a low temperature (around 1020°C), add glaze to the inside, and fire it a second time at a higher temperature (around 1240°C).   Our collection also includes various porcelain mugs and espresso cups that pair beautifully together.

Shipment/packaging:

For shipping, we meticulously wrap the porcelain white bowls in paper and place them inside a box, which doubles as a gift package. In case of any transporter issue, we insure the tablewares and are ready to ship you new ones.

Moca history:

Moca started as ceramic research during our graduation at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, based on a dripping machine. The project comes from combining technology and craft with a human/natural touch. We produced the tableware under our design studio, “Studio Joachim-Morineau” until we created our ceramic brand “Moca Tableware”.
